What is the Turning Point Program?

Upon being elected in  November of  2004, Sheriff Tim Burkhalter had a vision for our youth in Floyd County. He promised the community that he would provide programs for our children and in keeping his promise he began the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program, a division of the Georgia Sheriff's Association. However, he soon realized that there were other pressing needs in our community and also wishing to be a good steward of donor funds, choose in 2019 to develop his own program, which he has named "Turning Point."  As with many of the Programs the Floyd County Sheriff's Office offers, "Turning Point"  operates on donations provided through sponsors and individuals within our community. Every penny counts towards the goal of shaping our children for their future.

If you would like to make a donation and become part of this great program please contact us at 706-291-4111 Extension 8873.

Program Length: The length of this program is designed to run for one school term, beginning in September of each year and running through May of the following year.

Target Audience: The target audience for the Turing Point program is teenagers between the ages of 11-14 years of age, and is typically taught to seventh grade students. However, the beauty of Turning Point is that is can be adapted to students as young as 6 years of age or as high as 18 years of age.

Presentation: All lessons are presented through both verbal and audio-visual aides such as PowerPoint and also include hands-on activities to engage the students and encourage learning.

Class Length: Ideally classes are designed to be between Forty-Five and Sixty minutes in length. However, adjustments can be made to accommodate the need of the learners.

Instructor(s): Instructors of the Turning Point program MUST be POST certified as a law enforcement officer and also MUST successfully complete the POST Instructor Training Course within one year of appointment.

It is the desire of the Floyd County Sheriff and the members of his Office to provide a safe community for families to live and learn. That is why this program is so essential to both the community and your child/children.
